Product Page SEO: Beating Marketplaces on Their Own Terms

You will not outrank a marketplace on the product name. You can outrank them on the question the buyer asks next.

An online store product page on a tablet

Independent stores lose product-name searches to marketplaces with vastly more authority. That fight is not winnable head-on, and pursuing it consumes the budget that could have won the searches marketplaces handle badly.

Where independent stores win

  • Comparison and fit queries: 'X or Y for small kitchens', 'does X work with Y'. Marketplace pages answer these poorly because they are catalogues, not advice.
  • Problem-led searches, where the buyer describes a situation rather than a product name.
  • Specialist depth. A store selling one category can publish knowledge no general marketplace will ever match.
  • Local availability, where you can be picked up today and a marketplace cannot.

Fix the manufacturer description problem

If your description is the manufacturer's text, so is that of every other reseller, and search engines pick one to show — almost never the smallest site. Rewriting descriptions is tedious and it is the single highest-impact ecommerce SEO task there is. Prioritise by revenue: rewrite the products that pay the bills, leave the long tail templated.

Technical essentials

  1. Product structured data with price, availability and genuine review data. This is what produces rich results in shopping-intent searches.
  2. One canonical URL per product. Variant, filter and sort parameters generating dozens of near-identical URLs is the most common ecommerce indexing problem.
  3. Fast, correctly sized images. Product pages are image-heavy by nature and this is where the mobile experience is usually lost.
  4. Handle out-of-stock deliberately: keep the page, show alternatives, never delete a URL that has accumulated links and rankings.

Reviews

Genuine reviews on the page add exactly the unique content the page lacks, in the words customers actually search with. Collect them systematically, publish them unedited including moderate criticism, and mark them up honestly. Fabricated review markup is both a manual action risk and a consumer protection matter. This is the checklist we run through in a technical SEO engagement, and this site is the proof it holds.

  • 1 canonical URL per product
  • revenue the order to rewrite descriptions in
  • 0 deleted URLs for out-of-stock items

Frequently asked questions

Should we sell on marketplaces as well?

Usually yes, as a channel rather than a strategy. Marketplaces bring volume and take margin and the customer relationship. Own-site SEO builds an asset that keeps working; the two are complementary as long as you know which is which.

How do we handle discontinued products?

Keep the page if it has traffic or links, mark it unavailable and link to the successor. If the product line is gone entirely, redirect to the most relevant category — never to the homepage in bulk.
