For twenty years the prize was a click: rank, get visited, convert. That contract is breaking. Industry studies now put the majority of searches at zero clicks, and when an AI overview sits above the results, the first organic position keeps only a fraction of the traffic it used to earn. The person still got an answer. It was assembled by a machine, from sources it chose, and the win is now being one of those sources.

What GEO actually is

Generative engine optimization is the discipline of making your pages the material that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and AI overviews build their answers from — cited by name, linked as a source, or paraphrased with attribution. The term comes from a 2023 research paper that did something the marketing industry rarely does: it measured. Across thousands of queries, adding quotable statistics, citations and expert quotes to a page improved its visibility in generated answers by up to forty percent. Not tricks. Substance, structured so a machine can lift it.

What changes from classic SEO, and what does not

  • The unit of competition changes. In a results page you compete for a position; in a generated answer you compete for a sentence. A page can be cited for one precise claim while the rest of it is ignored.
  • The reader changes. Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so a site that renders client-side is invisible to them regardless of how well it ranks on Google, which does.

  3. Machine-readable structure: real HTML without JavaScript, FAQ and article schema, an llms.txt that says in one fetch what the company is and where the substantive pages are.
  4. Entity consistency. The same name, the same description, the same facts on your site, your directories and your profiles. Models weigh agreement between independent sources the way link graphs weigh authority.
  5. Freshness you can prove: visible update dates, and a sitemap whose lastmod tells the truth.

How to measure it

You cannot pull a rank report for ChatGPT, but you can measure the consequences. Referral traffic from AI platforms, now a distinct line in analytics that grew several-fold across the industry in a year. Branded searches, which rise when models mention you. Bing coverage, since it feeds the retrieval layer. And the bluntest test: ask the engines your customers' questions, monthly, and note who gets cited. GEO, AEO, AIO — is there a difference?

In practice, no. Generative Engine Optimization, Answer Engine Optimization and AI Optimization are competing names for the same emerging discipline, and there is no academic consensus separating them. Pick one, do the work, and ignore the terminology wars.

How long before AI engines cite a site?

Faster than classic SEO on the retrieval side — Bing picks up IndexNow submissions within hours, and Perplexity crawls aggressively — but citation depends on having something worth quoting. A site with precise, sourced, standalone claims can appear in answers within weeks; a site of generic marketing copy will be crawled and never cited.

How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT?

Five checks, in order: your pages must be readable without JavaScript, because most AI crawlers never run your app; your robots.txt must allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot; an llms.txt should state in one fetch what you are, what you sell and where the substantive pages live; you must be in Bing's index, which feeds ChatGPT Search — submit new pages through IndexNow; and your key facts must exist as standalone, liftable sentences. Do we have to pay OpenAI or Google to appear in AI answers?
