AEO: Shaping a Page So the Machines Pick Your Answer

Featured snippets, voice assistants and AI chat all reward the same page shape. AEO is the craft of building it, block by block.

Team reviewing content structure on a whiteboard

Search stopped returning pages a while ago. It returns answers: a featured snippet above the results, a voice assistant reading one sentence aloud, an AI chat citing two sources it trusted. Three different surfaces, one shared preference - pages structured so the answer can be extracted without interpretation. Answer engine optimization is the page-level craft of being that page.

Where answers actually come from

A featured snippet is Google quoting the passage that best matches a question. A voice assistant reads roughly one snippet's worth of text. An AI engine retrieves a handful of pages and assembles from the passages it can lift cleanly. None of these read your page the way a person does, top to bottom, giving you the benefit of context. They grade passages, and a passage either stands alone or it loses.

The shape of an answerable page

  1. Headings that are questions, in the words a customer uses. 'How long does a web project take?' outperforms 'Our process philosophy' because the machine matches the question before it reads the answer.
  2. The answer in the first forty to sixty words after the heading. Direct, complete, no throat-clearing. Elaborate after, not before - the inverted pyramid journalists have used for a century.
  3. One idea per block. A paragraph that makes three points gives the extractor three reasons to pick a competitor's cleaner one.
  4. Lists and tables for anything comparable. Steps, prices, options and criteria survive extraction as structure; the same content buried in prose does not.
  5. Definitions that stand alone: 'X is…' in one sentence, before the nuance. The nuance is for readers; the sentence is for machines.

The schema that matches the shape

Structured data does not rank a page, it removes ambiguity about what the page contains. FAQPage markup mirrors real question-and-answer blocks; Article markup carries dates and authorship; breadcrumbs give the machine your site's geography. Be honest about one thing: Google restricted FAQ rich results years ago, so the visual reward shrank - but the markup still describes your content to every retrieval system that parses it, and AI engines parse it. Structure for the readers you cannot see.

AEO, GEO - one family, two altitudes

AEO is the shape of one page; generative engine optimization is the site- and entity-level layer above it - being crawlable without JavaScript, publishing an llms.txt, keeping one consistent story across the web. The page-level work feeds the site-level work: an engine that trusts the entity still needs a passage worth quoting. We treat them as one engagement under technical SEO and GEO, because a page shaped for answers serves every surface at once.

  • 40-60 words for the direct answer under each question heading
  • 1 idea per block, or the extractor picks a cleaner competitor
  • 3 surfaces rewarded by one shape: snippets, voice, AI chat

Write the answer as if it will be read aloud by a machine to someone who will never see your page. Because it will be.

Frequently asked questions

Does FAQ schema still matter after Google limited rich results?

Yes, for a different audience. The visible reward - expandable questions under your result - was restricted to a narrow set of sites, but the markup itself still tells every parser exactly which text answers which question. AI retrieval systems consume that structure, and it costs nothing to emit when your page already has real questions and answers.

Do question-shaped headings make a site read like a FAQ farm?

Only if the answers are thin. A page can be question-led and substantive at once - the question earns the match, the depth under it earns the citation and the reader's trust. What reads like a farm is fifty questions with two sentences each; the fix is fewer questions with real answers, not prose-shaped headings.

How is AEO different from just writing clearly?

It mostly is writing clearly, with two mechanical additions: the answer placed first rather than built up to, and structure - headings, lists, markup - that mirrors the content instead of decorating it. Good writers resist front-loading because suspense feels skilled. Machines do not reward suspense.
